over rated?

Oh come on now, the matrix was a **** cool film, slick and heavily stylised with a challenging premiss, but by no means a favourite. At least it has something to say, "There is no spoon"; is it possible to do anything if you really believe in it?

I say signs the other day and it was sh*t, and i mean fu**ing diabolical. Shyamalan is a phoney who stumbled across a winning formula that he's now bleeding dry.

I know evryone thinks its overated but i saw donnie darko again last night and i really enjoyed it. Perhaps it is time for filmmakers to stop leading the audience by the hand and put something forward that is open ended and open to discussion and not just black and white.

But that is not a new idea in any way - it is a very familiar philosophical concept which goes back centuries.

I really can't understand people who use that reason OR that of the 'great' special effects to say that The Matrix is a good film. It has to be one of the most over-rated films in memory. To me, everything about it (apart from Hugo Weaving's performance) was terrible - I almost walked out of the cinema.

As for over-rated films of the moment how about Chicago.

Admittedly the dialogues cheesy and keanu, lawrence and all are wooden as **** but it was enjoyable to watch and there is a place for that in the cinema. Appently theres a sh*t load of hugos in the sequel, so you might enjoy it more, then again maybe not. Im not really trying to convince anyone the matrix is a great film 'cause it isn't. It just has it's plus points aswell.

I hate musicals in general, the whole idea of what a musical is is still stuck in the thirties. Frank sinatra is prancing around on top of the pops anymore so why do we have to see modern day clones of his peers prancing around the place. How about what pt anderson did in magnolia, is that a way forward to drag a genre into the next century?

No way is Soderbergh overrated.
Him and his production company have been responsible for some of the most interesting films to have been released in the last few years.

Look at films like The Limey, Out of Sight, and Insomnia, and any others that he been involved in. They all provide a refreshing break from the mundane rubbish we are used to getting out of hollywood

Shyalaman is milking his formula dry. Signs did what so many Bond films have done before -- and thats just to stirr up the ingredients from past films. Shyalaman has promise though. I'd like to see him do someone elses work for a change.

Gladiator was SERIOUSLY overrated. Firstly, Crowe should have won the oscar for The Insider not Gladiator. Secondly, go watch The Fall Of The Roman Empire. Same historical plot theme and a far superior flick.

Speilberg. Love him or hate him he can make a movie worth watching. Catch Me If You Can for example. If Spielberg wasn't in the hot-seat then I don't think anyone would have cared about that film.

ok i may be missing something here but how come everyone loves peter jackson so much?...i'm not saying he;s over rated cos i don't know enough about him, heavenly creatures was good and of course all the lord of the rings movies but how come he's suddenly a genious?

Lord of the Rings bores me to numbness.

Frighteners is much better.

Is Jackson overrated? He is 'of the moment' and has an air of credibility.

who cares about overratedness? surely if you think someone is overrated it just means that you share a minority view?

i have my own opinions. i don't overrate myself enough to kid myself that others will care what i think ;-)

If the topic was "overrated directors" and everyone came in saying
"who am i to impose my opinion? its only an opinion and why should anyone care", the purpose of the message board, chat channels, the internet, mouths and brains would be pretty much voided wouldn't it?

Still thats only my opinion, and i dont rate myself enough to think it matters [img]smile.gif[/img]
